Grasshoppers

Walking down the Murray Street mall on Saturday I saw a large flying grasshopper, perhaps a locust. Mum came round to my place last night, and as she was leaving a really big grasshopper jumped off my door:

Grasshopper of Unusual Size

Normally you see the relatively small crickets, this was large and very powerful. It made a hard clicking sound when it jumped, even with only one leg. Caught it and managed to grab this and another shot before it jumped away outside.

I wonder if it’s possible some interesting insects have been pulled down from the north with the cyclone weather front? I’ve not seen these guys around before. Got one other shot of the critter before the flat batteries in my flash gave out.

Anyone know bugs? What is this? :-)

Looks to me like one of the varieties of Spur Throated Grasshopper – they’re normally up north, but it’s not unprecedented to spot one in the south. I’m guessing Austracris guttulosa from the pics I’ve seen, but may be a different Austracris.
